Both types of siding material could be good for decades of harsh treatment by mold, rain, freezing temperatures, and pests. They are also designed to resist deterioration from ultra-violet light longer.

However, it could be said engineered wood takes the lead over fibre cement at this point. That’s because it is lighter and easier to install due to fewer seams, and is more impact resistant. As an added bonus it comprises renewable natural timber too.

The Decision May Depend on The Look You Want

Engineered wood generally ships as lap siding, panels and vertical siding, shingles and shakes. It has a natural wood texture, with drip lines that create pleasing shadows, although you could also source it in a smoother texture.

Fibre cement, by comparison is available as shingles, planks, rustic panels and thickened lap siding. But please note it is a combination of cement, sand, cellulose and fly ash, so you might have to deduct a few points on account of its green footprint.

Engineered wood is slightly more maintenance heavy. That’s because you should wash it down once a year with water and a brush, to remove dirt ingrained in the texture. You could use a garden hosepipe and mild diluted detergent to speed this up. However, avoid a pressure washer which could force moisture through the joints.

Fibre cement is more of a walk-in-the-park in terms of maintenance. It may not be quite as knock resistant. However, its smooth, beaded finish could keep shedding water and dirt for decades.
