Although fashions may come and go in Calgary, fibre cement siding has retained its appeal since an Austrian invented it in 1901. It is not difficult to understand why. This ‘wonder material’ cannot rot, termites cannot eat it, and it cannot catch alight either. No wonder it is still popular after more than a century of use.
What Goes Into Those Fibre Cement Siding Boards
Early fibre cement siding used asbestos fibres to add strength to the cement boards. Since the 1960’s manufacturers have used cellulose fibres instead. Canadians often call these ‘james hardies’ after the popular siding company. Competing materials include polyvinyl chloride, vinyl, aluminum, and wood composites such as hardboard and masonite.
How We Use ‘James Hardies’ on Our Projects
We use fibre cement products meeting international standards as overlapping boards, and to imitate traditional wooden siding, clapboards, and shingles. We also use it in sheets for cladding where the customer prefers a smooth finish. In high fire-risk areas we use it for soffits and eave linings too. The boards are 12′ long, with the most common width 8-1/4″, but 7-1/4′ and 6-1/4″ are also available. This results in 7″, 6″, and 5″ exposure respectively, with 1-1/4″ overlap.
Fibre cement siding is heavy compared to vinyl and aluminum. It also chips and breaks if mishandled, so it needs two strong people to install. We are able to cut thinner boards by scoring and snapping. Thicker boards require diamond-tip saws, in which case face masks and good ventilation are essential precautions.
Once Up, Fibre Cement Siding Comes Into Its Own
There is little to beat fibre cement siding reinforced with cellulose fibres once it is up. It requires minimal maintenance, and resists rot, insects, and fire. The material also comes closer to a natural wood effect, because it is matt compared to glossier vinyl. Hence, we suggest using fibre cement siding in appropriate situations and anywhere else the client prefers.
