How Engineered Wood Siding Is a Greener Alternative

Engineered wood is a composite board in which wood derivatives bind together with adhesives. These derivatives may be particles, strands, fibres or other sawmill scraps. Hence, engineered wood siding is not an entirely green material, although it does have practical advantages over natural timber. Modern engineering methods also add a texture that makes it look quite like the real thing.

Engineered Wood Siding Versus Fibre Cement

While these two products may appear similar the eye, they are poles apart in practice. Engineered wood in up to 12-foot-lengths does not give off harmful dust when cut, whereas shorter fibre cement lengths require special precautions.

Both fibre cement and engineered wood siding may have water-related issues if incorrectly installed. The former of these types of siding may cost up to 50% more than processed wood, but then it is naturally flame-resistant, and often has a longer transferable warranty.

Practical Aspects of Engineered Cedar Siding

Being a natural product, made primarily from cedar and aspen scrap means engineered wood siding requires regular maintenance as with any other timber product. This task becomes simpler after applying a stain or oil or paint, compared to leaving it untreated. The installer must fit the product correctly to ensure adequate water run-off, and no places where moisture can accumulate permanently.

Relatively high-maintenance cedar and other hard engineered wood siding is available in a variety of styles including bevel, lap siding and traditional shingles and shakes. For a seamless appearance, try modern tongue and groove. Alternatively, you may prefer a trad board and batten effect.

Do however bear in mind that initially cheaper engineered wood siding will cost you more than you might initially think, unless you are selling on right away.  Because you need to sand it down every 3-5 years and reapply the coating. You may also have to replace individual panels or shingles periodically too.

While cedar is an organic, renewable material, being natural comes with a fire risk unless you apply a flame-retardant. On the positive side, it will not end its days lying in a landfill for centuries. We only supply engineered cedar siding made from timber the Forest Stewardship Council certifies economically viable, and not from old-growth forests for extra peace of mind.
