How De-Icing Cables Reduce Ice Damming in Winter

Ice is less likely to stack up on the main roof of a house in winter, because the temperature in the roof space below is above freezing. However, the situation is different above the exposed eaves, because these are in contact with below-freezing temperature air. The melt over the eavestrough may ice up, and build to form a dam.

Unless we take proactive steps the melt higher up the roof can back up against the ice dam, leak through into the roof space, and from there to the living space below. We have begun using roof and eavestrough de-icing kits in Calgary and surrounds. We are happy to announce good success and decided to explain how they work

How Our Roof and Eavestrough De-Icing Kits Work

A de-icing kit comprises lengths of heavy-duty electrical cables, with elements running through them that warm up when required, and melt any ice dams as they develop by creating melting paths. These are self-regulating, so they can turn the heat up as required.

We are able to install them on most types of roofing, and provide a three-year limited manufacturer’s warranty. No maintenance should be necessary. Moreover we guarantee the quality of our workmanship, and we have $2 million liability insurance to back it up. We strongly recommend avoiding cheap substitutes, and using a qualified contractor instead who knows how to install the cabling safely and correctly.

Fair Enough, But Won’t It Look Ugly on My Roof

Ugly no, because we lay the electric cables in patterns, and attach them with neat clips. Different, perhaps yes because this is still new technology. We believe more and more roof de-icing kits will start appearing all over Calgary soon. Besides, which would you prefer: An ice dam throughout winter, or a warm, dry house below?
