What You Should Know About Roof Decking

Roof decking is supposed to cover over attic space, not conceal a multitude of sins. You might be surprised to know how often roof decker’s cover substandard framework, on the basis the client won’t know the difference.

We’d never do that at Valiant Exteriors just to get the business. Our policy is always full disclosure. On that basis we thought we’d share what you should know about roof decking, but maybe never thought to ask.

The Primary Functions of Roof Decking

Roof decking, or roof sheathing as some folk call it primarily completes the main roof by adding structural strength. And provides a solid surface on which to mount the shingles, sheets or tiles over weatherproof membrane.

Its primary purpose is not to look good. Although at Valiant Exteriors we are proud of all our jobs, whether patching in or starting from new. We figure the extra time spent provides an opportunity to quality control our work, and deliver on our promises.

I’ve Heard There Different Types of Roof Sheathing to Choose

Sure there are and we do several types, including our all-time favourites plywood board, oriented strandboard (OSB), and the classic standard, tongue-and-groove planks. Although to be honest the nature of the job often indicates what’s best in the interests of the client. Here’s what you should know about the roof decking types that are choice of most of our customers.

1… Oriented Strandboard Sheathing goes on fast because the individual boards are up to sixteen foot long, and each covers a considerable space. This can be the most economical solution, because they make it from young, renewable trees, and the rigid, moisture resistant material is consistent on both sides.

2… Plywood Roof Sheathing also goes on fairly fast, because the boards are four foot by eight foot long, and each covers a reasonable space. We know from experience to use material from mature trees in this instance, that is certified rigid and moisture resistant. However, do note the knot spacing is random.

3… Tongue-and-Groove Sheathing adds a classic touch to open ceilings. However, it does take longer to fit the slots into the grooves, and attach the two foot by six foot planks neatly and perfectly parallel. This may be the most expensive option, because we are using solid wood from renewable forests.

Valiant Exteriors Offers Other Options Too

We are also able to provide roof decking in plank sheathing and step sheathing too, and all to our same high standards. Give us a call on Calgary (403)829-1661, or drop us a line and we’ll arrange to pop by with samples, and photos of jobs we did.
