$3,000 Rebate on Your New Calgary Roof

The 2021 severe hailstorm awoke Calgary to the challenges home owners face as climate change begins to bite. The scars of that extreme weather event are still visible if you know where to look. On June 1, 2021 the city introduced a $3,000 rebate on new Calgary roofs, and we decided it was time for an update.

The Nuts and Bolts of the $3,000 Rebate

The rebate scheme is a three-year program limited to householders. It offers a $3,000 rebate towards replacing a hail-damaged roof. Or for that matter replacing any roof within city limits with a certified Class 4 impact-resistant product.

The subsidy will be available through to May 31, 2024, or such earlier date as allocated funds run dry. Calgary is saying ‘get your roof fixed before the next big storm while the offer lasts’.

STAGE ONE began on June 1, 2021 and was open to eligible homeowners on a first-come first-serve basis. Moreover they had to have experienced damage to the roof of their home from any hailstorm in 2020.

STAGE TWO took over on January 21, 2022. This extended the rebate to eligible homeowners intending to, or having replaced their roof with Class 4 impact-resistant products after June 1, 2021.

PHASE THREE will only commence on June 1, 2023. At that stage the rebate will extend to anyone who is building a new home. The program will finally terminate on May 31, 2024 unless funds run dry sooner.

What is a Class 4 Impact-Resistant Roof?

A Class 4 impact-resistant shingle roof is able to withstand a 2-inch steel ball dropping multiple times from a height of 20 feet under controlled, observed conditions.

These ‘IR” shingles as the trade calls them can help minimize roof damage during a severe weather event, and potentially extend the life of a roof. Many insurers also offer a discount on their premiums making this something to consider too!

There are two types of Class 4 impact-resistant shingles on the market:

1… Those with polymer-based mesh embedded in the underside of a standard asphalt shingle to prevent splitting.

2… Those with a rubber-like polymer blended into the asphalt to make the product more flexible and hail resistant.
