The Water From Your Downspouts

The job is not done when you have your new eavestroughs up, and running smoothly. That’s because you can’t afford to do nothing about the water tumbling down the spouts to the ground.

For if you did, the force of the water could drill down and erode the soil supporting your foundations. Or if you added a simple elbow, a torrent of water could dig a trench through your garden. It could cost time, even money to repair the damage.

We always recommend draining water above ground, due to freezing in winter months. Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can manage the situation without breaking your bank, or allowing the forces of nature to take over.

Five Ways to Manage Downspout Water

  • Attach PLASTIC ROLLOUT SLEEVES to the lower ends of your downspouts. These use the same principles as party blower whistles. They unroll automatically as the force of the downspout water enters them, and then recoil when the flow stops.
  • Add a PERMANENT ALUMINUM EXTENSION instead. These are far more robust, and there are versions you can fold away when you need to garden around them. However, these are rigid and you may need to change the landscape to suit them.
  • Install a STEALTH FLOW SYSTEM that allows the water to trickle away. This is one for the avid gardener, because it is easier to conceal with plants or rocks. However, the downside is you lose touch with the water flow and it can block.
  • Keep an eye on things with an OPEN WATER CHANNEL. Open water channels may not be the prettiest solution around, but they do work, and most importantly they are easy to keep clear. Make sure they have a natural slope.
  • Think water wise with a RAIN WATER BARREL. The pundits warn us we can expect more dry periods in future, between times of heavy rain. Water is also becoming a scarce resource. This is the most expensive, but most socially responsible option.
