Nowhere to Attach the Gutters

The building in our image is an eavestrough-installer’s dilemma. They arrive on site to quote, but find there’s nowhere to attach the gutters. We’re innovative folk at Valiant Exteriors. Sometimes we find a practical solution , in fact more often than not.

Why Are There Buildings with Nowhere to Attach Gutters?

We regard an eavestrough system as an essential accessory to every house. That’s because they lead rainwater away from foundations, so it can’t weaken the soil around them. Heaven knows, we’ve seen the consequences of not doing so more than a few times.

These are twoof the reasons folk tell us they end up with this dilemma:

  • We asked the architect to create a low energy building with smooth flowing lines. Leave everything out that’s not essential, we said. We want an as-close-to-zero footprint as possible. We didn’t realize the rainwater would pour down our necks every time we went in and out. Now there’s nowhere to attach the gutters.
  • We were short on cash flow when we were building our home. When we finally reached roof height we had to finish the job as cheaply as possible. We couldn’t afford gutters and down pipes, but we didn’t like the idea of bare rafters. So we flowed the shingles over the edge. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

Three Ways We Know to Attach Gutters to a Building

Do It the Traditional Way…

The right way to attach gutters is to screw the holding brackets to the rafter ends. These are the natural result of extending roof edges to create overhangs. This proven system works. It’s also cost-effective and our tried and trusted solution.

Another You Could Try…

We came across an idea that suggested extending eavestrough brackets, and screwing them down beneath the shingles. The author describes a roof with a molding that “transitions through to the walls”. We have not trailed this method.

Something That Worked…

We completed a job the other week where we attached false rafter ends through the roof covering, to the timbers inside. We attached our proprietary brackets to this. The system is working well, and the client is pleased with the result.
