Setting the Right Gutter Slope

Setting the right gutter slope is critically important for a successful installation, as we explain here. The term refers to the slope from the higher end to the lower end where the down pipe is. Or if, you prefer, the angle of the gutter when viewed across the fascia board.

This detail, which may seem unimportant to the uninformed home owner, determines the velocity with which the water flows through the eavestrough system. Set the slope too gentle, and it is more likely to clog with leaves and other debris. Make it too steep, and the water is likely to flow across the downspout and splash over the gutter end.

The Right Way to Set a Gutter Slope

There is more to setting the right gutter slope than aligning it with the eye, and hoping it all works out. Valiant Exteriors has been in the business in Calgary for a while now. We strongly believe in the principal of a quarter inch drop, over ten foot length.

At the same time this sometimes needs to be adapted to allow for down pipe locations, the number of pipes, the roof type and overhang, and the length of the gutter sections themselves. Installing eavestrough systems requires a holistic approach. If the gutter slope is set wrong, this can lead to a number of annoying complications.

The Warning Signs a Gutter Slope Is Incorrect

INSUFFICIENT GUTTER SLOPE

An over-gentle slope means that the water drains more slowly than it should. This can lead to the gutter overflowing, and the homeowner wondering whether they should have more down pipes. However, this could also spoil the appearance of a residential home.

GUTTERS SLOPING AWAY FROM DOWN PIPES

Some gutters slope slightly upward, close to down pipes. This is incorrect and encourages accumulation of debris at that point. The problem can arise when the downspout is incorrectly fitted from below. However, at least some water will still drain away.

EXCESSIVE GUTTER SLOPE

Too much slope can also cause issues. A fall of a quarter inch over ten feet in length is the optimum setting. Any more than that can accelerate the water flow, and result in water overflowing to the ground below.
