Combining Roof and Gutter Replacement

There may be good reasons for combining roof and gutter replacement. The roof goes up faster when there are no gutters in the way, and you can colour-match the two to create designer effects.

You may also get a better deal compared to doing the two jobs separately, thanks to economies of scale. Moreover, professional roofers understand how precipitation flows, and they can match the gutter design to perfection. However, there is more to the topic than that.

The Pros and Cons of Combining Roof and Gutter Replacement

You can upgrade your total roof system

If you replace your roof and gutters simultaneously, you should have an updated system where everything matches. Moreover, the new roof does not draw the eye down on aging gutters, and so on. A new, seamless guttering system may make your roof safer and more efficient too.

You also have the comfort of having a roof and eavestrough system with matching capacity, so the gutters can cope with the flow of precipitation flowing down, and you don’t have water splashing over.

But steady on, you may not need new gutters at all. You might have replaced them a few years ago, and besides why fix something that looks good and is working well. However, old gutters can conceal defects like rotting fascias. Combining roof and gutter jobs exposes problems you might not otherwise know.

You can get the roof up faster

Having to work around existing gutters complicates a roofing job, and this may knock on to the price. Modern gutters are soft aluminium and hence easily distort. Moreover hauling weighty roof material over them can be a challenge.

But hold that thought. You won’t be getting the gutters free, and you may end up replacing fascia that might otherwise have lasted a few years more. However, if your gutters are at the end of their tether take them down, replace the roof and add new seamless gutters.

Remember to hire a roofer who knows how to repair gutters so they look good against your new roof. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to whether combining roof and guttering jobs is a good idea.
